Hazel saw that the cat behind the fence was not well-fed.
She went to the fence and said, "who's there? What do you want?"
The long-furred white tom cat answered," I live in this forest, in ThunderClan. My name is Cloudtail".

Hazel looked at Cloudtail and said, "whats Thunderclan?" a gasp came from behind Cloudtail. Cloudtail spoke first, "this is Whitepaw, my daughter". A white she-cat came out behind Cloudtail. "you don't know what ThunderClan is? I can't believe that!" Whitepaw yowled. "Whitepaw, this is a kittypet, how would she know?" said Cloudtail sternly to Whitepaw. "A kittypet? That's what you call me? That's a horrible name!" yowled Hazel.

River sat in the twoleg's yard, looking up at the forest. She wondered what was over there and if she'd ever get to visit the place.

River had often seen wild cats roaming the forest. They had been scrawny and thin, but they were well muscled and a light shone in their eyes that she had never seen in her friend housecats before. They seemed to like living wild. River though about what would happen if she asked to join them. They probably would snarl and mock her, and then chase her out. But... what if they didn't? What if they accepted her? True, recently her housefolk had been seeming boring and dull next to the tantalizing forest scents and sounds, but could she really give up her comforts and live with the wildcats?
